If I showed you my house right now, you’d run in fear. Okay. Just kidding! But honestly, I have my days where I wish I had a fairy godmother to go “bippity boppity boo” and all the mess is cleaned up and my house sparkles and shines. I really laughed at myself while typing that.
Come close, I need to tell you a secret. *whispers* I. Hate. Cleaning. Unless I’m really agitated and need to work out frustrations. But other than that, cleaning is not my thing (which is weird because I’m more than slightly OCD.) If I’ve learned nothing else in life, I’ve learned one valuable lesson: You have to know yourself and what works for you. So in knowing myself, I’ve learned a couple of tricks to keep my house mess-free, sans fairy godmother.
Create a Schedule
This is my number one tip. My life is busy. And not just fake busy but the “if it’s not on the calendar it will never get done” type of busy. I have to schedule everything- especially cleaning. Try creating a schedule where you clean just once a week or you can create one where you clean a little everyday. Whatever works best for you and keeps you on track.
Let your housemates help
You don’t have to be Superwoman (or Superman). If you live with others, especially children, let them help you! If I were to try to do it all myself all the time, it would never get done because I’d be too overwhelmed. Chores and chore charts are a blessing!
Be diligent and consistent
In order to see results in anything you must be diligent and consistent. Creating a schedule and sticking to it is key. Don’t allow cleaning or tidying up fall off of your radar. When you miss one week, it piles up and becomes more daunting than if you were to just do it right away. When you finish with dishes, wash them right away (or load the dishwasher). When you finish with the hair products, ladies, put them back and not just on the counter. Consistency keeps the mess at bay.
When I was a little girl, my mom would always say “Brittany, everything has a home”. You may have heard it said “A place for everything and everything in its place.” What these two phrases are saying is to be organized! Create places for everything to go and make sure they go there. When things don’t have a home, it’s a breeding ground for mess and chaos. Pinterest has some AMAZING organization hacks- even dollar store ones that don’t have to break the bank. Try them to eliminate mess.
When all else fails, embrace it
Bet you didn’t think I’d say this! At the end of the day, sometimes mess happens. A messy home is a home where things are getting done! Mess is a sign of life. Instead of going bat crazy because of the mess, step back and smile because you’re living a great life. Then grab a broom and clean it up.
